Mexico – Long Haul with Children

Hola! If you follow along on Instagram I can only apologies or the mass posting of holiday snaps lately, I think I may have over done it. We’re just back from an incredible trip filled to the brim with happy memories, let me share the details.

The Hotel

We stayed in The Finest Playa Mujures near Cancun, my goodness me…it was lush. Located on a gorgeous stretch of white sand beach lined with palm trees and sun canopies, this place has the wow factor. At the Finest they believe child friendly holidays should not lack in luxury, for me this sealed the deal, it was exactly that, luxury for the whole family.

Rooms and suites are plentiful with the option of swim up and plunge pool. Dining is not typical all-inclusive buffet style, the food is seriously devine, I felt like I should have been paying top dollar every time. There was also themed nights that did not disappoint, pirate dinner on the beach and a Bollywood themed event where two of my favourites. Oh and not to forget the Sweet Corner, their very own coffee and ice cream stop, perfect for afternoon goodies.

The finest resort ticked every box for us, child friendly luxury. The beach is beautiful, the resort is well planned out and the kids club is fantastic. Staff were a pleasure to be around and for me the dining was a huge highlight. It was just perfect!

Why Cancun

With most UK International airports flying direct to Cancun it’s a perfect non stop long haul location. I’ve been a few times (before children) so I knew roughly what to expect and I’ve also done plenty excursions which meant I wasn’t too fussed about doing anything this time round, this holiday was all about relaxing. Cancun has something for everyone, family trip, honeymoon, holidaying with friends, it really does tick so many boxes and with it’s year round weather it makes a great vacation throughout the winter months too.

Travelling with Children

Travelling long haul with children certainly can be a daunting thought. We travelled as a family of four and yes at times Darren and I felt a little outnumbered but with patience and good forward planning we done absolutely fine. My top tips for flying long haul with children are:

  • Packs games, activities, books and iPads and be sure to use them wisely. I like to keep the element of surprise present throughout the flight so I kept Alfie from seeing in his case! “What’s next from the case” became a new game.
  • Snacks, plenty of snacks. On travel days routine goes out the window, everything needs to be a bit more relaxed, I find my toddler more likely to snack the entire day and I’m ok with that!
  • Move around. Larger aircrafts are great for moving around, move around as much as possible, (you wouldn’t expect a toddler to sit still for 10 hours at home)!
  • Dummy/soother for take off and landing. (or sweetie for children old enough)! I’ve found this helps every time, I also find both children are sleeping by the time we reach flying altitude.

This holiday was exactly that… ‘a holiday’. It was a chance to switch off and unwind, something I thought wasn’t possible with two young children. A break from the everyday is so good for the soul, refreshed and revitalised I’m ready to spend summer at home. So tell me, where are you jetting off to this summer, I’d really love to know!
