Congratulations, you’re almost there, in no time at all your little bundle will be here, in your arms. Isn’t that an exciting thought, isn’t it also a daunting thought! In-between those precious wonders of ‘what will she look like’ you find yourself asking over and over, am I organised, are we ready for the baby arriving?
Let me share a little secret, you can never be too organised and equally you will never feel fully organised no matter when you start preparing. With our second baby due this month (eeeek) I don’t feel like I’ve done much at all to prepare this time round! That being said I don’t feel as pressured, I’m definitely more relaxed this time. I remember feeling like a rabbit in headlights when it came to baby products in my first pregnancy. What was essential, what didn’t I know about, why was there so many baby products on the market, I wanted the facts on what I NEEDED! What I quickly learned is every parental experience is unique in their own way, what works for one family, may not necessarily work for another. I’ve listed what worked best then and what I’ve learned and invested in for going forward. These are my baby essentials.
A car seat isn’t optional, in the UK it’s essential for taking bubs home from hospital. With a huge variety on the market all offering unique features and selling points, which one is right for you! For me, safety comes first, followed by practicality. I’ve opted for the award winning BeSafe iZi Modular i-Size Baby Car Seat for exactly those reasons. The I-Size baby car seat is designed for babies newborn to 18months. UK guidelines state babies should remain rear facing until 15 months, this car seat gives the option of both forward and rear facing with plenty of leg room for growing babas. It’s so easy to install using the Iso fix base and is compatible with most strollers. I also have the follow on seat for Alfie’s age, the iZi Modular I-size which will last my little one up to age 4. I find both these car seats are safe, practical and provide utmost comfort for baby.
Sleepyhead Deluxe Pod
A new-born must! Okay so I admit, I was that Mum-to-be who may have rolled her eyes at the thought co-sleeping, isn’t that an easy alternative to sleep training! Two years in and I co-sleep with my little one every night, I’d go as far as saying I’m a co-sleeping champion, I wouldn’t have it any other way in our home. The Sleepyhead Deluxe pod makes that possible from newborn. I found it perfect for moving around the house, travelling and visiting family. This Newborn Essential list runs in no particular order but if I had to place one item at the top, the Sleepyhead is a must have. I’ll be doing a complete review of the sleepyhead and accessories once Bubs is here but for now take my word for it, it’s one to invest in.
Jeez how I underestimated the power of a great changing bag first time round. It’s only taken 2 years to find the right one, a bag that organises me (not me organising it), a bag that is convenient as well as stylish! As a new mum I found changing bags to be bit meh, not my style, not something I wanted to invest in. That was purely because I hadn’t discovered the right bag, until now. For my baby girl I’ve gone for the Stella Changing Bag by Alf The Label. With 9 internal pockets to store everything I need from nappies, wipes, cream, soothers, it’s like having my own personal organisation system on the go. It’s a beautiful bag and yes yes yes to stylish Mama products… Alf the Label do exactly that!
By now you’ve probably started to stock up on nappies and wipes, I did too. I’d pick up products on offer by different brands and bulk buy where I could. Then my first born came along and I quickly became more aware of the products I was using on his delicate skin, nappies included. was also pretty shocked at how quickly I went through products, those little people make a lot of mess in those first few years! I discovered Eco By Naty, an eco friendly baby brand that use 100% certified bio and plant based material against the baby’s skin. A nappy subscription made complete sense. Just so you know, I would normally freak out at the thought of any subscription, I just don’t like to commit. The thing is, I’m not going to change my mind next week and opt to no longer need nappies, wipes, poo bags… they’re in my life for the next 2 years minimum, having piece of mind that what I need will be delivered to my door when I need it, with the added bonus that these products are award winning premium performance, well that’s a game changer.
First time round I was late to the party with baby wearing, by the time I really got into it, Alfie had just about found his feet, so that was the end of that. This time I plan on doing a lot more baby wearing, especially around the home. I’ve been shopping around for newborn carriers and fell completely in love with the Baby Bjorn Carrier Mini and not just for the pretty blush tones, (you can see there’s a blush theme going on here). This carrier is designed to hold baby higher up encouraging that bond between baby and parent, I love that. It’s small, easy to use and it made with super soft fabric, perfect for those first few month with baby.
I didn’t use a moses basket first time round, you live and learn, I so wish I had. Instead I spent a lot of time and energy humphing my Next to Me crib from my bedroom to the living room, scraping and bashing furniture along the way, (not the baby I promise)! This time I’ve found the perfect first bed for manoeuvring around the house. Meet the award winning modern day moses basket, the Moba Moses Basket, which I have in dusk pink (of course), it’s beautifully designed and looks beautiful around the house.
You’ve heard it all a million times by now, fed is best. If you do decide to breastfeed, my advice, don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’t set too many goals or think too far ahead, take each day, enjoy each feed and embrace that time with your little one. I breastfed Alf for 6 months and introduced pumping around week 10. What a relief being able to share those night feeds and what a joy for his Daddy to share that precious feeding time too. A great pump will make the world of a difference to your breastfeeding journey. I spent a great deal of time in pain, I was miserable pumping for hours with my first born, it felt like such a tedious task. Little did I know then, my breast pump (which was a last minutes pick up on sale) was no good at all! I’m so glad to have switched to a better suited pump in time to enjoy those last few months of feeding. Medela offer a fab range of pumps to suit every feeding mamas needs, I’ve loved using the Swing Maxi and really are grateful to have this from the offset this time round!
Hold on a minute, a high chair isn’t exactly a Newborn must, is it? Not initially as baby won’t technically need a feeding chair for a good few months however the Stokke Tripp Trapp is more than just a feeding chair. with my firstborn I felt so restricted when spending time in the kitchen, the bouncer on the floor just never felt quite right. This time round, I’ve been introduced to the TrippTrapp Newborn Set which suits our family needs perfectly. The Baby Set comfortably cradles your newborn at table height encouraging interaction and building on those relationships with all the family. For a chair that allows even the littlest of people to be in the heart of the kitchen, (my favourite place to be), I’d say investing in the TrippTrapp, the chair that grows with your baby, is a must.
Another huge decision to make, where to start when choosing a pushchair! That will depend entirely on your own lifestyle. For us, practicality and comfort is a must, it just so happens that Joolz nail that alongside being super stylish. I need a pushchair that can go from muddy off road treks in the park to city strolls and coffee dates around town. The New Joolz Day3 is exactly that. This trendy pram manoeuvres effortlessly, boasts amazing suspension and has an easy one hand folding system, I’ve written a full review of the Joolz Day 3 here.
Now, the carseat is installed, nappy box filled and the nursery is coming on nicely. I’m 37 weeks today and I think I’m as ready as I’ll ever be! Second time round, I’m certainly not a pro at this motherhood just yet however the above products absolutely make life with newborn that little bit more manageable, that little bit more seamless. What’s your newborn must have, please do get in touch to share.
Rest up Mamas To Be, hope to see you again soon.
All my Love
